A few weeks ago, NASA asked the public to vote on their favorite name for Manikin (a type of human-sized dummy) which would be used as part of the Lunar Artemis I Mission. Space fans talk and now NASA returns with the final name for the latest manikin: Commander MOONIKIN CAMPOS. Yes, that’s right. Cmdr. Moonikin will be equipped with spacuit suit and launched by itself into space.
A manikin is basically what is the most common public call Test Dummy: This is the size of the size of life such as humans who can be used to collect data in situations where humans can be at risk, such as in cars or on spacecraft. Boeing recently detailed Manikin himself, Rosie, who will participate in the upcoming flight.
For its part, NASA plans a repeater mission called Artemis I who will involve launching Manikin. Dummy will be installed on the Orion spaceship, which will be launched using Rocket SLS. In front of the planned flight, NASA came with various potential names and asked the public to choose which one they like the most.
That’s how we arrive at this latest announcement. Artemis I Manikin is now officially known as the Commander Moonikin Campos, by last name to honor Apollo 13 “key player” Arturo Campos. This name beat another half a dozen, including ACE, Shackleton, Montgomery, Wargo, Rigel, and Duhart.
Moonikin commander is the same dummy that was previously used to test the vibration level on the Orion spaceship. This time, Manikin will wear a suit of the Orion crew survival system and be tied to the seat of the capsule commander, who will have a sensor behind the headrest. Moonikin will also have two radiation sensors to collect additional data.
