There are several applications for a long time listening to the song footage playing on the radio and telling you who sings it and what the song name is. Something similar has now debuted called the Bird Merlin ID application that can identify what type of bird singing. This application was developed by Cornell Lab ornitology and free to download.
Merlin can recognize sounds from more than 400 species of birds in the US and Canada. Merlin listens and uses artificial intelligence technology to identify each species. This application displays a list of real-time and photos of birds that sing or call in your area. The university promises future updates that will allow the application to identify additional bird species.
Identify what type of bird sing is very difficult, according to researchers. They made a breakthrough when they began to treat sounds as pictures and apply a strong image classification algorithm as it turned on the Merlin photo app feature. Each sound recording user makes converted from a waveform to a spectrogram, which is a way to visualize amplitude, frequency, and duration of the sound.
Basically this application uses bird sound images to make IDs. The technology behind the sound identification process was powered by tens of thousands of citizen scientists who contributed bird observations and voice recordings to the Cornell Lab global database called Ebird. In the database it is thousands of voice recordings used to train Merlin to recognize individual bird species.
The database also contains more than a billion bird observations that allow Merlin to know which birds tend to be present in a certain place and time. This application can now identify birds in four different ways, including with sound, with photos, by answering five questions about the birds that are in the user, and by exploring the list of expected birds in the user’s location. Merlin can also identify the sound of birds even if many birds sang at once.
