Daniel Negreanu is a Canadian-American multimillionaire, who ranks among the wealthiest pro card players of all time. With a poker career spanning more than 20 years, he has racked up awards and massive jackpots from all over the globe. To date, his estimated net worth is between $50 to $65 million.
Early Life
Born to Romanian immigrant parents in Canada in 1974, Daniel Negreanu grew up with his older brother Mike. During the time he attended Pineway Public School he often got into trouble for misbehaving or ignoring the rules. According to Negreanu, even at a young age, he was already determined to be successful and often daydreamed of attaining wealth.
Although poker seems like a perfect fit for him now, as a teenager he spent his days hoping to pursue a snooker career. During this time he would often hang out at pool halls where he also got exposed to card games—one of which was poker. After discovering he had a natural talent for the game, Negreanu dropped out of high school to begin his life as a professional poker player. While playing in local casino games, he met fellow poker player and future pro Evelyn Ng. At age 22, Negreanu moved to Las Vegas to finally start his big-time poker plans.
Professional Career
Although his initial forays were not without hardships—he had to move back to Canada following bankroll losses—Negreanu soon began making a name for himself. In 1997, he won two events at the World Poker Finals despite being relatively new to pro poker. In 1998, he proved that his earlier win wasn’t just beginner’s luck by winning his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet.
Nicknamed “KidPoker” in professional poker circles, Negreanu is now largely regarded as one of the greatest poker players of all time. His most notable achievements include six World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets, two World Poker Tour (WPT) bracelets, and making it to the WPT finals table twice. Aside from the aforementioned achievements, Negreanu is also credited as the inventor of the “small ball” playing style which became popular among players in the early 2000s. This concept is based on playing aggressively with a small bet to earn big wins. His creativity and talent have earned him the respect and admiration of fans and colleagues alike. This has resulted in him getting inducted into several halls of fame and receiving player of the year awards.
Aside from playing poker in high-stakes games, Negreanu’s professional career also includes some acting credits. Like fellow star athlete-turned-actor Karl Malone of the NBA, Negreanu has also showcased his skills on TV and in the movies. His filmography includes roles in films like Lucky You, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Detention, and The Grand, to name a few.
Recent Wealth Accumulation
Just like any sportsman, Negreanu has suffered losses, too. Recently, despite having a strong hand, he lost against Yuri Dzivielevski at the GG Poker World Series of Poker. Thankfully, Negreanu didn’t have to wait long afterward to restore his winning status and further pad his wallet. Just this year, Negreanu won two high roller titles including a September Poker GO event that won him over $170,000. Before this, in July, he also won the overall title at another PokerGO Cup. During his post-win interviews, Negreanu shared that these wins “re-energized” him and inspired him to work harder to keep battling newer and younger competition. Given his unwavering dedication and ability to conquer any poker tourney, it’s safe to safe Negreanu’s net worth will just keep growing from here.
